Happy Solstice

I didn’t appreciate seasons until I moved to Seattle. It’s one thing to intellectually know that winter celebrations are about the sun; it’s another thing to be submerged into darkness every October. Now I viscerally know that lights on trees, houses, street-corners are not just fun and decorative. If you’re in the dark, a light is precious. Even the most simple strand of bulbs is a beacon of camaraderie.

When you’re dark and cold, you also get a deep appreciation for the people who keep you company. I’ve been fortunate to work this year with smart, dedicated people on important projects, and that definitely puts the Irish in my coffee. Neighbors, friends and family bring the sugar and the cream!

As Wordsworth would say in one of my favorite books of all time, “Upon my word! How lucky I am.” And so very, very grateful. Thank you, and have a happy new year.
