If you’re a health care provider, quality care and sustainable finances are your most important issues. They are also increasingly public issues, as lawmakers and government agencies seek to regulate health care value.
Too often, leaders of hospitals, clinics and health systems avoid these topics, leaving an unfortunate gap in the public conversation. The fact is that it doesn’t matter whether it’s a Chamber of Commerce breakfast, a legislative hearing or a media interview: the public needs to hear from health care providers on an ongoing basis.
The good news is that it doesn’t have to be hard to talk about health care in a compelling and accessible way. It just takes a solid framework and a little preparation and practice.

After dozens of conversations with health care communications staff and leaders over the years, I’ve developed a fun group training to help leaders understand how to determine the right message and deliver it with credibility. This training is intended to help build the skills of the people most likely to be called upon to talk to non-health care audiences: executives, board members and clinical leaders.
This is not advanced speaker training; no one will get a TED Talk or a spot on the CNN anchor desk. Still, your organization will be better prepared to respond on bad days, and engage with your community on good days.
Group training allows for more fun, conversation and mutual support—they also fit better into regular training budgets. They also stimulate internal conversations. If your CEO is the only person who can talk to the media, community groups and elected officials, you’re missing important opportunities to tell your story.
